Background to the Jersey Arts in Health Care Trust
In the belief that the Arts are non discriminatory the Trust was established to offer the benefits of the Arts, in their widest sense, to those people who would otherwise have limited access because of issues of health, mobility or special needs. In practice, the Trust, which is a pioneering body, takes an holistic view of the healing process whilst concentrating its efforts, at any one time, in a number of key areas:
" Provision of performances, under the aegis of the Council for Music in Hospitals, to residential homes (private and public), day care centres and hospital wards.
" Encouragement of local performers within the health care system.
" Dissemination of information on the wider benefits of the Arts through workshops, training sessions and talks.
" Advocacy of the value of the Arts therapies, including the provision of public workshops, pilot projects and the creation of an agency to facilitate, monitor and evaluate such initiatives.
" Support for organisations and initiatives with common values or objectives.
Resume of Routine Activities Organised by the Trust
" Six tours (seven in 2003) per year, by visiting musicians, in collaboration with the Council for Music in Hospitals. 134 performances to a total audience of 2250 people.
" “Read On” project covering 160 sessions to a total audience of 1043 people.
" Directory of Local Musicians being maintained and regularly updated.
" Sustained contact with a wide range of care settings - ie hospitals, day care centres and residential homes.
" Support given to pottery project, in Juniper Ward, at St. Saviours Hospital.
New Initiatives which have taken place during 2002 and part of 2003
" Visits to residential homes and day care centres by members of the Trust to monitor work and assess individual needs.
" Social activity training for volunteers to organise a range of activities in a range of care settings.
" Strong liaison developed with a range of organisations, within the community - ie Art in the Frame.
" Visit of Peter Senior, Director of Arts in Health, at Manchester Metropolitan University, was influential in strengthening links between the Trust and the Health and Social Services Committee.
" The Arts Therapy project was the most significant development. The Education Committee has agreed, within the context of the creation of the new Education, Sport and Culture Committee, to find provision to enable an agency to be established to facilitate the work of art, drama and music therapists and monitor and evaluate their work.
Future Planning
" Maintain the programme of tours by musicians from the Council for Music in Hospitals.
" Consolidate plans to create Arts Therapy Agency and commission.
" Continue to develop, and strengthen, liaison with Health and Social Services Committee on policy/working group for the provision of artefacts.
" Continue the programme of visits, by officers of the Trust, to monitor and evaluate its work in all areas of activity.
" Investigate ways in which a website can be developed.
" Review the constitution of the Board of the Trust.
