The future is bright for construction
Simon Border
Geomarine
Although there have been some difficult times for the construction industry recently, the year ahead looks promising according to Simon Boarder, director of Geomarine Ltd, the civil engineering contractor.
Speaking from the perspective of those involved in civil engineering, he says several exciting opportunities are on the table for the near future which have raised confidence for a more stable and sustainable future. These include the continued development of the waterfront, the States solid waste strategy and future planned remedial works to St Catherines breakwater and other harbour structures.
A general shortfall in tendering opportunities and cut-backs in spending over recent years has led to peaks and troughs in demand. Mr Boarder says this fluctuation in demand and work load can create instability and affect confidence while trying to maintain a committed and consistent workforce.
Training
'Investment in training has always been a contentious issue as the general perception is that contracts and employment within our industry can be short term. Keeping abreast of developments, particular with regard to health and safety as well as providing good training and commitment to quality, all comes at a price.'
'Geomarine's philosophy of investment in staff training has been essential in maintaining standards and providing best value to our clients. Although competition is good to maintain value and prevent complacency, our intention has always been to offer the best value rather than just the cheap alternative. As well as providing peace of mind to ourselves, our philosophy has paid dividends through a continued workload and referral of satisfied clients. Continued commitment and funding is key to our future success.'
'This year all sectors of business have been faced with the added burden of the income tax instalment scheme. With the perception of a migratory and short-term workforce the construction industry was faced with some possible losses from its workforce.'
'Similar concerns were expressed at Geomarine, but in general it was felt that it would provide a more stable environment for everyone in the future and as yet we haven't lost any staff as a result.
'An important part of the whole construction industry, civil engineering contractors provide for the construction and maintenance of public works such as road works, deep drainage, reinforced concrete construction, harbours and airports and general infrastructure. We also benefit from the continued success of the larger builders and developers from the spin-off work that is generated and the specialist elements required.'
'Geomarine is part of the Garenne construction group, which encompasses other leading local companies such as Camerons and AFM. It offers the full range of services to civil engineering and construction including piling, site investigation, deep drainage, reinforced concrete construction and road works.
'Its geotechnical services are complemented by its rope access team, which offers an effective and economical alternative to other traditional forms of access.'
'Construction and engineering are an exiting industry. It is important to keep abreast of developments and technology to maintain ones position in the market.
'This reflects our company's philosophy of innovation rather than imitation. We are continually moving forward and developing business relationships with new ideas. This is underpinned by our experience, and expertise in effective organisation of effort, energy and resource.'
