JEP’s Message to Asia – Sunday 30 January
FIVE thousand people have stood 'Side By Side’ to express their ongoing support for the regions devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami.
They spelt out the message 'Side By Side’ on St Ouen’s beach to symbolise the way that the community has supported the relief effort and also its intention to carry on helping in the future.
The event was organised by the Jersey Evening Post, which is selling copies of the photographs to raise funds for the Jersey Asia Relief Appeal.
Newspapers and websites all over the world have carried the picture, from Melbourne to Toronto, Sri Lanka to Norway.
Jersey has raised almost £2 million for the British Red Cross’s disaster relief appeal.
JEP chief reporter Anthony Lewis, who organised the event, said: 'We are a sea dependent community, like many of those hit by the disaster. This was our way of saying that we stand together with those communities not just now but for the long term and that we will do whatever we can to help.’
