Drunken driver was three times over limit

A MOTORIST who was more than three times the limit was disqualified for two and a half years by the Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Domingos Mendonca Coelho (42) was also sentenced to 70 hours of community service, the equivalent of two months in prison, after he admitted driving while unfit on Victoria Avenue on Tuesday.

His lowest alcohol reading in two breath tests had been 112 mg, which the court said was very high and put him in the top band for the offence.

Coelho, a self-employed gardener from Maufant Village, had been seen driving his van very slowly and hitting a kerb, Centenier Danny Scaife told the court. Another driver who noticed him slumped over the wheel at traffic lights took away his keys and called the police.

Defence counsel David Hopwood said that Coelho had been very co-operative with the police and was remorseful. In his case, the driving had been too slow rather than too fast.
