News from the

Saved from sharks

By Harry McRandle

A JERSEY couple had to battle for their lives when a yacht they chartered for a day capsized in the Caribbean.

And as Bernard and Gillian Gosselin clung together for about 40 minutes with two other men who had been on board, they had to contend with the added fear of shark attack as live fish bait that fell from their boat was all around them. Fortunately, they were pulled to safety by a Canadian-crewed ship that was alerted to their plight by a mayday sent out from their charter vessel, Hook. What was supposed to be a dream holiday to celebrate the retirement of Mr Gosselin turned into a nightmare when he and wife Gillian found themselves in the sea 12 miles off Tobago. The couple, who live in Queen’s Road, had chartered the 29-foot yacht to allow Mr Gosselin to fulfil his dream of catching a large marlin. However, they ended up struggling for their lives when the boat suddenly sank.
