Elected States Members

The Island does not have a formal party political system even though political parties are not precluded. Members are elected as individuals. There is a widespread belief in the island that the lack of political parties is a great strength and prevents dramatic swings in policy. However, there is also a strong move towards reconstructing the machinery of government to provide stronger executive powers.

Senators
The office of Senator was created in 1984 and the 12 senators are elected on an island-wide basis. Senatorial elections are held for six seats every three years in October.

Constables or Connétables
The Constables are the elected heads of the parishes, and by virtue of their office, are full members of the States. They are elected by the voters of their respective parishes and serve for three years. Over the years, the election dates have become irregular and do not always coincide with the elections for Senators and Deputies.

Deputies
Deputies are elected by district, and elections are held every three years in November. The larger parishes have several districts, with St Helier, for example, having three districts and 10 deputies. The smaller parishes have one deputy.
