Football: 'It's a test of character'

By Andy Bradshaw

JERSEY manager Dave Kennedy is under no illusions that Blackburn Rovers Reserves will be playing to full capacity tomorrow afternoon at Springfield.

The Premiership club have taken up Jersey's invite for a game at Springfield and with a team packed with pace going forward, Jersey's defenders could be in for a tough afternoon.

Kennedy said: 'We had a light training session last night and the players showed some good quality in possession, something they will have to do on the pitch tomorrow otherwise they'll be on the back foot all the time.

'When we have possession tomorrow we have to use the ball well and if we can do that together with not making silly mistakes I'll be happy.

'One thing is for certain if you make mistakes against the quality of the opposition we are playing against we will be punished.

'We are using this game as part of our preparation towards the Muratti next year and it will be a good benchmark to see where we are.

'I'm also looking to see our players compete for 90 minutes. It's not about the result for us, it's about the character of the players and I'm keen to find out which players are looking to give everything for the full duration.'

Kennedy confirmed that all 18 players in his squad will get time on the pitch.

Muratti defenders Scott Devlin (Jersey Scottish) and Kevan Crowell (St Peter) have been drafted into the squad replacing Trinity's Steven McCarter (exams) and St Paul's Jon Fitzmaurice (unavailable).

Blackburn's squad, managed by Glen Hodges, including European Championship U21 winner and golden boot forward/winger Maceo Rigters, from Holland, and German Sergio Peter, another winger who has represented Blackburn 20 times in the Premier League.

The game at Springfield kicks-off at 1.30 pm therefore not clashing with any televised European Championship qualifiers being played later tomorrow afternoon.

Admission to Springfield is £5 for adults and £3 for senior citizens and children under 16.
