Sport from the

World snooker bid blow

By Andy Bradshaw

JERSEY snooker player Ray Kilmartin's challenge for a place in the knock-out stages of the IBSF World Amateur Snooker Championship have been hit hard with consecutive defeats.

And in both matches in Korat, Thailand, the first ever Channel Islands cueist to play in the championship let slip a two-frame advantage.

Kilmartin has now dropped down to eighth position in the 13-player Group A and he now needs to pull out a succession of big wins to help him achieve a top-four place to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Yesterday Kilmartin was 2-0 and 3-2 up against Sweden's Jim Johansson only for the Swede to hit back and win 4-3.

Today Kilmartin won the opening two frames, 60-17, 74-18, against Israel's Roei Fernandez only to be beaten 4-2 with the final frame going against Kilmartin 46-38.

The Jersey cueist will be looking to win both tomorrow's matches to move back into contention, they are against Oman's Ahmed Basheer, who is currently twelfth, and Belgium's Yvan Van Velghoven, who is sixth.
