Travelling with Pets
There are no restrictions on taking your pet - as long as it is not an exotic animal - into the UK.
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora regulates the transport of exotic animals.
If you are travelling to any country outside of the UK with your pet and have no intention of returning to Jersey, you need to obtain documents required for your pet to enter that country. If you intend to return with your pet from a country that is within the Pet Travel Scheme, the animal must have been registered with the PETS scheme prior to leaving the Island. The conditions of the scheme can be obtained from your vet. If these conditions are not met, your animal may not be allowed back in without being placed in quarantine for six months.
The PETS scheme only applies to cats and dogs. The only approved PETS travel route between Europe and Jersey is aboard Emeraude Lines from St Malo, which requires that the animal travels as a car passenger.
For more information, contact the Department of Agriculture & Fisheries, Jersey. Telephone: +44 (0)00; Fax: +44 (0)01 or visit its website at www.agfish.co.uk. You also can contact the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in the UK at: +44 (0)10 (9am - 5pm Monday to Friday); Fax: +44 (0)34 or via e-mail: . Postal address: Pet Travel Scheme, DEFRA Area 201, 1a Page Street, London, SW1P 4PQ.
Living in countries outside of the PETS Scheme
Those travelling from countries outside of the PETS Travel Scheme must apply for an import license from DEFRA in the UK. Your pet must be quarantined for six months and as Jersey does not have a quarantine facility, arrangements must be made to board your pet in an approved facility in the UK.
For more information, contact the DEFRA helpline - (within the UK 9am-5pm Monday-Friday) or +44 (0)51. There is a minicom/textphone number for the deaf and hard of hearing: 0845 300 1998. The fax number is: +44 (0)29. The helpline e-mail address is: . To contact DEFRA's Quarantine Section, phone: +44 (0)22; Fax: +44 (0)34 or e-mail: .
Additional requirements to take your pet out of Jersey
Some of the PETS qualifying countries may also require other, separate, certificates such as an export health certificate to show that your pet meets certain health conditions set out by those countries. These requirements are separate from those of the PETS Scheme. Contact your vet for details on how to get an official export health certificate.
Other countries may require an import licence issued by the authorities in those countries. You must contact those authorities directly to get one. The Export of Cats and Dogs Section of DEFRA should have a list of contact points.
If a separate certificate is needed to show that your pet has been vaccinated against rabies, your vet should be able to provide one.
These regulations are subject to change by the authorities of the countries concerned. Before travelling, find out what documentation is needed for your pet to enter that country well in advance of your intended travel date.
