Tourism enjoys a two per cent rise in visitors

By Kathryn Lundy

STAYING visitor figures are up two per cent on last year, but nearly 200,000 fewer people have stayed in Jersey this year than 15 years ago.

It means that while Tourism celebrates a turnaround in figures after ten years of decline, it is still far from the successes of 1993.

In those key areas Tourism is keen to attract, however, this year has seen significant increases.

Over 1,000 more leisure visitors - measured by places in guest houses and hotels - arrived from France than they did last year, and from Spain, Portugal and Italy there has been a total 27.7% increase.

In fact the number of Portuguese visitors almost trebled in the last year (up by 169.4%) - just eight down on 1993 - and Austrian visitors have increased by 82.5% on last year. From 134 visitors 15 years ago we now have an influx of 827.
