Stanley Gibbons profits from market in rarities

By Christine Herbert

SALES of autographs and rarer items have boosted Channel Islands-based listed company Stanley Gibbons Group to a new high.

The stamps specialist has reported a 25 per cent increase in profit before tax for the six months to 30 June, to £1.7 million. Sales rose by 16 per cent during the same period, to £8.8 million.

Stanley Gibbons, a leading brand for stamp collectors, is a Jersey-registered company and also has a 'showcase office' in Guernsey, as well as 'the world's largest stamp shop' in London at 399 the Strand.

Chairman Paul Fraser said earnings per ordinary share of 5.16p, up 30 per cent, had benefited from the 20 per cent tax rate on new business coming through the Guernsey office, which opened last year.

Average order values have increased by 36 per cent compared to the same period last year, with sales to collectors of stamps from Great Britain increasing by 67 per cent.
