Pensions and related benefits
Pension
A pension is a weekly benefit paid to people who have reached pensionable age. You do not have to be retired to qualify. A pension is intended to meet basic needs in retirement. The amount you receive is based on the contributions you have paid during your working life. The Department strongly advises everyone to consider making arrangements for other forms of income after retirement, such as a private pension plan or an occupational pension from your employer.
A States pension is normally paid when you reach the age of 65. However, you can claim a reduced pension at any point between the ages of 63 and 65. Women who joined the Jersey Social Security Scheme before 1 January 1975 can claim a pension when they reach the age of 60.
Death Grant
If a family suffers a bereavement, a death grant may be payable to assist with funeral expenses. The funeral director will assist you in this area or you can contact the Department for more information.
Survivor's Benefits
There are two types of survivor's benefits that can be paid to you when your spouse dies. The Survivor's Allowance is paid for the first 52 weeks after your spouse dies. To qualify either you or your spouse must be under pension age on the day of his or her death. Survivor's Pension is paid when the Survivor's Allowance ends and until you reach the age of 65.
Christmas Bonus
This is paid every December to all people living in Jersey receiving a pension or receiving certain other benefits or allowances. Claimants living outside the island, who are due to receive the maximum rate of a qualifying benefit or allowance during December, may also qualify. The bonus is paid to those who are entitled. However, anyone over pensionable age who is not in receipt of a specified benefit may claim a bonus if they have been resident in Jersey for the previous five years.
If you are at all unsure about the allowances and benefits to which you may be entitled or have any queries about Employment and Social Security, visit the Department or log onto its website - www.ess.gov.je - where you will find full information about its services, opening hours and contact details.
