Income tax in Jersey

Who has to pay?
- Anyone who receives income from within Jersey.
- Anyone who resides in Jersey is liable to tax on overseas income as well as Jersey source income.
- Definitions of residence may be complex and individuals should refer to the tax office for confirmation of their status
General information
In January tax return forms are issued to individuals asking for details of their income, deductions and allowances for the previous year. Assessments should be completed before the end of August. In September notices of assessment are issued. These show the amount of income tax due based on what income has been assessed, deductions and allowances granted. The tax, at a rate of 20%,is payable immediately. Failure to pay the tax bill will result in a hefty fine.
Tax exemptions, allowances and appeals
Exemption limits and allowances are reviewed annually according to your income and personal circumstances, of which you should notify the tax office of any changes. When you get a notice of assessment check it thoroughly as a notice of appeal must be made within 40 days.
