Trading Standards Service

If you are in dispute with a trader regarding goods purchased or a sub standard service or you just have a general consumer enquiry - call Trading Standards

Officers provide a free professional confidential Advisory Service. After hearing your problem, the Consumer Advisory Officer will explain your rights and advise on the best way forward. In some circumstances he may approach the trader on your behalf and endeavour to negotiate a suitable remedy. Additional assistance will also be given to consumers with particular needs.

Trading Standards have the particular responsibility of ensuring goods on sale in the Island are safe, businesses trade fairly and all weighing and measuring equipment is accurate.

Trading Standards now has a dedicated website www.tradingstandards.gov.je with up to date (Jersey) information on a range of subjects including advice leaflets, how to write a letter of complaint, safety advice, frequently asked questions and consumer news. This is very much a "help yourself" area. Once you have browsed, you can, if you wish, register a complaint online and an officer will be in contact with you.

There is also a facility whereby you can register to receive all of the latest product recall notices and have consumer news e-mailed directly to your pc. This is particularly useful for parents with small children who wish to be alerted to toy and nursery recalls, electrical items in the home or food hazard warnings. You can select whichever category you are interested in.

As a small dedicated team (of four officers) they are committed to directing resources to the right areas. They welcome your suggestions and feedback about the standard of service they provide. Customer satisfaction survey forms are available online, by phone or can be collected from their offices.

The Trading Standards is situated in the Central Market, next door to the post office. The entrance is via the personal weighing office.
