Jersey Licence
You must be 17 to drive in Jersey and you must have a valid driving licence, a current windscreen insurance disc and valid third party insurance, which covers your use of the car.
A licensed driver must always accompany those driving on a provisional licence. Learner (L) plates must be attached to the front and back of the car.
Your parish hall has the forms needed for a provisional or a full licence. You have six months from the time the provisional licence is issued to take and pass the written and road tests.
If you will be living in Jersey for more than one year, you must get a Jersey driving licence immediately. If you hold a driving licence from an area that has a reciprocal agreement with Jersey, go to your parish hall to exchange your licence for a Jersey licence. Reciprocal agreements exists between Jersey and the following areas: Alderney, Austria, Barbados, Belgium, British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Quebec, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
All other foreign licence holders must sit the appropriate driving test (theory and practical). A provisional licence is available from the parish hall. Drive with learner's plates until you pass the driving test. The theory test can be booked by phoning DVS at on or on line at www.dvs.gov.je. The practical and theory tests are given at the Driver & Vehicle Standards Department (DVS) in St Helier.
After passing the driving test, go to your parish hall to obtain your Jersey licence. Bring your provisional licence, the Pass Certificate issued by DVS and two passport size photos. For more information, contact DVS at or your parish hall.
If you move to another part of the Island, go immediately to the parish hall and exchange your old licence for a new one free of charge. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
