Jersey Youth Service
The Youth Clubs offer a welcoming environment for young people to spend their free time in a leisurely atmosphere.
The Jersey Youth Service is a partnership of voluntary and Parish run clubs, states funded youth projects and clubs, and the uniformed groups (The Guide Association, Scout Association, St John Ambulance, The Girls' Brigade and The Boys' Brigade).
Informal educational opportunities are provided by trained youth workers, volunteers, and invited guests. The clubs offer music, refreshments, games, and many sporting or cultural visits. Outdoor and adventure activities are often planned, and there is sometimes exchange between the clubs. Project work is informal and may include the exploration of topics such as health, racism, drugs and alcohol. Through their interaction and participation, young people have the opportunity to enhance their learning, develop their confidence and make informed and valuable choices within a friendly framework. This encourages and enables young people to achieve their potential, with the assistance of activities, advice, information and support.
There is a Detached Youth Work Team based in town that work with young people whilst they congregate on the streets. The St Helier Project Worker is involved with activities or specific issues geared towards young people who would rather not be involved with the clubs. Baby-sitting courses and Underage magazine are several of these projects.
On a weekly basis:
- 89% of 13-19 year olds are involved in youth based activities
- Young people hold 326 voluntary sessions with other young people
- Adults give 385 voluntary sessions of support and leadership
The Jersey Youth Service offers training courses, activities and competitions for the youth groups, to support the young people and volunteers. Once affiliated to this service, groups are entitled to use other facilities such as residential centres. These include the Silver Jubilee Activities Base in St Mary, St Aubin's Fort, a variety of watersports including instruction, the catamaran ÔSpirit of Variety', the 21' fishing boat ÔSpirit of Young Variety' and a wide range of equipment (games, sports, audio-visual).
The Jersey Youth Service is always looking for volunteers. For as little as 2 hours a week you could work towards change, share your skills, and give something really valuable to young people. If you want to find out more about the Jersey Youth Service call The Youth Office Education Department on (9am-5pm), or fax .
