I ATTENDED the Moonlight Parade on Friday after convincing my friends that it was a great night out, as I had attended the event once before.
We were a little late arriving, but straight away it was clear what a great show it was! The effort and detail that had gone into the floats, big and small, was truly fantastic, and it reminded us all of how deeply proud we could be part of Jersey and its unique culture.
What a shame, though, that the honorary policing of this event was so heavy-handed and uncompromising. Diplomacy was not on their agenda that evening.
Safety is of course paramount, especially with so many children around. However, incredible as it may seem, we members of the public are capable of independent thought - and yes, if we see an ambulance approaching we will move two inches off the sacred yellow hatching. We don't need reminding literally every two minutes for three hours!
They should have tried to treat us like adults. I know that we were not the only ones there who found their behaviour over the top, to say the least. In an Island which has all but lost its community policing, this episode saddened us all.
